Ralph began her career on the stage. In 1982, she was nominated for a Tony Award for The Best Performer in a Musical for her part as Deena Jones in Dreamgirls. In 1988, she starred in the Disney movie Oliver & Company, supplying the voice of Rita. Her first leading role came in The Mighty Quinn. In 1992, she portrayed the character of Robert De Niro’s mistress in Mistress. Ralph was known for her part in television as Ginger St. James on It’s a Living, Etienne Toussaint-Bouvier on Designing Girls, Dee Mitchell on Moesha and Cheetah on Justice League and Justice League Unlimited. She produced Divas Just Singing, which has become an important AIDS fundraiser. In 2008, Ralph was given an honorary doctorate of humane letters from Tougaloo College after giving the commencement address. She graduated from Rutgers University. She won a scholarship in a contest at the American College Theater Festival, but stop medication for the performing arts. She is wed to Pennsylvania State Senator Vincent Hughes.
